Demo Taped: What Are You Listening To?

Rising artist Demo Taped shares with TIDAL a playlist of the music, both classic and new, that has been in his rotation.

Curtis Mayfield, “Makings of You (Live)”
Curtis Mayfield is such a legend. I always go back to this song as a sort of blueprint. I just think everything about it is perfect. The live version just makes you feel as if you’re in the room and it’s flawless.

D’Angelo, “Higher”
This song makes me think of that feeling on a Sunday when you’re leaving church. You’re still feeling that gospel groove but you have to go on with your day. That’s what this song is. Cruising in the car on a Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. Feels like home.

Francis and the Lights, “Morning”
A beautiful start to a beautiful album. I like this song so much, I set my Sonos to wake me up to it every morning.

Frank Ocean, “Provider”
Another song I drive to a lot. You have to find roads with lots of curves for this song.

The Isley Brothers, “For the Love of You, Pts. 1 & 2″
OOOOOooooohhhhhweeeeeeeee. You can’t help but dance to this. I dare you to sit still through this whole song. I’ll save you time- it’s impossible! This is one of the many songs and groups my parents introduced me to.

James Brown, “The Payback”
This song just pumps me up. I mean.. I really go nuts when this song comes on. You just instantly feel like a badass when the guitar to comes in.

Seu Jorge, “Lady Stardust”
A great song, re-done by an incredible musician. I first heard this collection of Bowie covers by Seu Jorge in the film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It’s one of my favorite films and hearing songs I knew by Bowie sung over acoustic guitar and in Portuguese blew my mind.

KAYTRANADA, “Lite Spots”
The groove!!!!! I played Lighting in a Bottle Festival last year and I got the chance to see KAYTRANADA play a 90 minute live set. I’ve always enjoyed his mixes and thought his album was just killer. Hearing this live, through the BIIIG speakers, was magic.

Cashmere Cat, Major Lazer & Tory Lanez, “Miss You”
This song is so bouncy. I loooveeee that they sampled a part of Palmistry’s Lifted. That song was my jam for a long while. I think it was How To Dress Well that showed it to me in the sessions for my upcoming EP. Hearing that familiar little melody made me double take. This song is so well made.

Passion Pit, “For Sondra (It Means the World to Me)”
This song is truly wonderful. The arrangement leaves you short of breath and just when you think it’s about to wrap up, the vocals come in. The song is so real. I really loved this whole album. And a big shoutout to Michael Angelakos for speaking up about mental health and the importance of checking in with yourself emotionally.
