Discovery Discussions: DJ Carisma
TIDAL Discovery was designed to give new and independent artists an opportunity to be heard by allowing them to upload their music directly to TIDAL.
But the Discovery platform also strives to arm the stars of tomorrow with the tools and advice they need to move their career in the right direction.
With that mantra in mind, we reached out to some key entertainment influencers who are not only experts in their respective fields but have also had a hand in discovering and breaking new talent. Follow Discovery Discussions as these tastemakers share their insight on what it takes to make it in the music business.
Young California and REAL 92.3′s DJ Carisma’s reputation for breaking new artists is spreading from Los Angeles to the rest of the world.
And it didn’t just happen overnight. Carisma developed her craft through countless hours of spinning to create a unique style that entertains her many fans and crosses multiple genres.
We recently sat down with the two-time Global Spin Awards Female DJ of the Year who also curated an exclusive playlist for TIDAL.
Learn how to upload your music to TIDAL here, and see some of the fresh talents who already did, currently featured on the TIDAL Discovery section.

How did you get your name, Carisma?
It’s close to my real name. I remember a girl on Buffy the Vampire slayer had the name Charisma and I always thought that was dope so I dropped the ‘H’, looked it up and was like “I’m Carisma!”
Where are you from?
Santa Ana, CA. Young California.
How did you get your start as a DJ?
High school and at church house functions. I really worked my way up into radio.
Tell us about the Young California movement? How did it start and who’s a part of it?
DJ Amen from San Francisco was doing the same thing in the Bay Area that I was doing here in LA. We linked up and Amen was like, “You wanna Create a DJ crew with me that’s based with the hottest radio, street and club DJ’s all throughout California to focus on breaking and highlighting local artists?”
You’re known for breaking new artists. What makes you take a chance on playing an unknown artist where some established DJ’s wouldn’t?
I get a lil tingle in my spine. [laughs] Every artist that I’ve worked with had a different situation. All I know is that if I’m a fan of your music that’s the best start.
What advice would you give to an artist that’s trying to be discovered?
Get ready! It’s a lot of hard work but grind, network, build the best brand you can build.
Tell us about your new single? Who produced it and who’s featured on it?
It’s called “Til The Morning,” featuring Chris Brown and Dej Loaf. It was produced by the Featherstones and myself.
Do you plan to do an album? Will it include unknown artists?
Yes, I plan on releasing a few projects this coming year with both established and of course unknown artists. That’s my passion.
Are there any artists you believe we should be on the look out for?
RJ, Nef the Pharaoh, Raven Justice, Paloma Ford, Lyrica Anderson and Starrah, just to name a few.
Any other new projects in the works?
Yeah, I’m excited to be at a new radio station, Real 92.3, and very excited about what’s in store for me in the iHeart family. I’ve also been executive producing a few projects that are coming this year as well. Stay tuned!
