Remembering Sharon Jones

Sharon Jones, the unstoppable, Grammy-nominated soul-singer and front-woman of the Dap-Kings, passed away on November 18, at the age of 60. With her incessant energy, charisma and work ethic, Jones was hailed by many as the “female James Brown,” helping lead the classic soul reboot of the 2000s. Growing up in Brooklyn, Jones nurtured her talent by singing gospel in church and performing at talent shows, not launching her solo career until her 40s thanks to the formation of the esteemed soul-funk label Daptone Records, whose first release was her debut studio album. She would release five full-length records, tour the globe with the Dap-Kings and star in the 2015 documentary Miss Sharon Jones!

We pay our respects to the the wonderful life and work of Sharon Jones with this Legends playlist. Be sure to also check out our Best of Daptone Records playlist, featuring Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, The Budos Band, Antibalas and more.

YG Essentials

Born and raised in Compton, California, YG is a staple artist for West Coast hip-hop and with his major label debut, My Krazy Life, he exposed the mainstream to Blood slang (switching Cs with Bs). YG helped establish a new Ratchet sound alongside friends DJ Mustard, Ty Dolla $ign, RJ, Kamaiyah and others. Propelled to the top of hip-hop’s ranks with his June 2016 album Still Brazy, YG just hit back with his latest mixtape, Red Friday, which he commemorated with his bombastic TIDAL X: YG livestream concert, which also featured performances from TIDAL Rising artists Kamaiyah, RJ, Sad Boy, Slim400 and DJ Vision.

Hits can be made and measured in so many different ways – from viral videos and Twitter trends to streaming sensations and your good old fashioned charts climbers – it’s hard to keep up with all that is new and hot. This regularly updated playlist offers our take on some of today’s most popular songs across pop, rock, R&B and hip-hop, highlighting both hot new hits and buzzing chartbusters-to-be.

Gilmore Girls

Nearly a decade after its initial closure, Gilmore Girls just premiered its much-anticipated revival in the form of  four 90-minute installments on Netflix. Initially running for seven seasons between 2000 and 2007, the award-winning and hugely popular TV series was known not only for its cool characters and fast-paced dialogue, it was also peppered with an outstanding soundtrack throughout. Celebrating the 2016 revival of the series, we have picked out some of our favorite musical memories and highlights from the show’s original run, making for one awesome soundtrack.
