Irv Gotti Brings ‘Tales’ Uncensored Director’s Cut to TIDAL

Irv Gotti is bringing his Tales to TIDAL. After making its premiere on BET in June, the Murder Inc. Records label founder will debut the uncensored director’s cut of the hip-hop anthology series, where the music industry veteran creates movies based on the genre’s beloved classics. Several songs that have been turned into cinematic visuals include N.W.A’s “Fuck Tha Police,” Meek Mill’s “Cold Hearted” and Notorious B.I.G.’s “I Got A Story To Tell.”

“What made me want to partner with TIDAL for Tales is I’m a Rated R guy, I don’t like PG-13,” Gotti recently told TIDAL. ”I had the deal secured with Stephen [Hill] and BET but I wanted the people to see the raw shit, the director’s cut and the Rated R shit. They can’t see it on BET. So me and my brother went to dinner with Jay and I just flat out asked him, “Can TIDAL play videos or movies or TV?” And he said, “Yeah, the technology that TIDAL has is the best technology of all these motherfuckers out here.” Not only could we play it but it’s gonna be the best quality and the sharpest out there.”

For TalesGotti also tapped a crop of rising actors including Matthew Noszka, Chet Hanks (Tom Hanks’ son), Lethal Weapon‘s Michelle Mitchenor, The New Edition Story‘s Keith Powers and Woody McClain as well as Moonlight‘s Jharrel Jerome and Empire‘s Bre-Z. ”When I first came up with the creation of Tales, it was always in my mind as something I wanted to do to give new actors a chance, a shot to blow up. One it’s an anthology series. Each week, it’s a different cast of characters, different storyline. … With this, I could kill the main character, it doesn’t matter. Next week, it’s something else.”

Each uncensored episode will go live 30 days after it airs on BET along with behind-the-scenes footage. “BET has to play 40 minutes of commercials for a two-hour episode, [viewers[ really have 80 minutes of content whereas with TIDAL, you'll get an additional 20-30 minutes of footage that's not in the BET eversion. Then on top of that, you're gonna get another 15 to 20-minute piece of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of that episode on TIDAL."

Gotti then offers an example, “Say there’s a love scene. On BET, that love scene may last a minute. Can’t show no titties, can’t show no ass. We like tits and ass. Men and women—we like tits and ass. So when you watch it on TIDAL, that love scene may last three minutes on TIDAL and there may be some tits and ass.” Curse words are also fair game. “You’re gonna hear everything you wanna hear. I don’t like watching shit that don’t have no cursing or sex scenes in it — I wanna see that. It’s real and that’s what you’ll get with the TIDAL version.”

He adds, “This now would allow me to get my creativity off and do whatever the fuck I want to do.”
