Blast Choreographer JaQuel Knight’s Party-Starting Playlist
Los Angeles-based choreographer and creative director, JaQuel Knight, has been putting in work for the last decade of his career.
After gifting the masses with iconic routines for Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” and “Formation” to choreographing videos and performances for Big Sean, Tinashe and Ty Dolla $ign, the Atlanta rep shared the jams currently on his rotation.
“I’ve been in LA, living & working, for 10 years now. So this playlist shows me how far I’ve come as a professional and the ground I’ve covered as an artist,” he tells TIDAL. “But most importantly, it reminds me of where I come from as a person and allows me to keep that guy in check. Happy Dancing!”
Get in formation with JaQuel Knight’s curated turn-up and his footnotes below.
Ciara “Goodies”: One of my all time favorite songs to dance to. As soon as the record comes on, I start doing the Ciara walk right away! Super infectious!! And let’s not forget to talk about how HOT Ciara is in the video!
Ty Dolla $ign “Drop That Kitty” Feat. Charli XCX & Tinashe: The concept behind the dance for this video was to create a vibe that felt like back in the day. I wanted to bring back the look of a pop star with dancers and actually dancing!
Tinashe “2 On”: Had a lot of fun on this, as it was Tinashe’s debut as an artist. We were able to focus on just killing it with the dance and setting the energy of the record! Tinashe is a really great talent to work with where you are free to do whatever you want to do!
Britney Spears “I’m A Slave 4 U”: One of my all time favorite Britney records and one of the most epic Award show performances to date… EVER.
JAY-Z “On To The Next One” Feat. Swizz Beatz: You can never go wrong with a Swizz Beatz record! The combination of him and Jay is just perfection.
Zara Larsson “Ain’t My Fault”: I think Zara Larsson is the future of pop music. Working on this video, it was my goal to bring out her star quality for the rest of the world to see by using all of the attitude and young energy she has.
Jennifer Lopez “Booty” Feat. Iggy Azalea: Who complains when they get to work with J.LO and that booty of hers!? LOL Had a great time coming up with the “Booty” dance.
Liam Payne “Strip That Down” Feat. Quavo: One of my new favorite jams right now. Liam is such a fun person to work with! Super thankful for him and his team for allowing me to release a full dance version of the video.
OutKast “B.O.B.”: Being from Atlanta, if I had to wrap my city up in one song, this would be it. It reminds me of my entire childhood and reminds me of all the good things Atlanta is about.
Cardi B “Bodak Yellow”: It’s the energy. It’s her delivery. It’s when the beat drops. And when the beat drops, I rock so hard! And I actually would like to work with her one day and help her with her stage presence and set.
Sean Paul “Gimme The Light”: Whenever I want to feel like I’m in a dark basement dripping in sweat, this is the song that I blast in my crib!
DJ Khaled “Wild Thoughts” Feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller: My favorite song at the moment—even after having played it out! Kudos to Khaled for creating the song of the summer!
Tinashe “All Hands On Deck”: One of my favorite videos I’ve choreographed to-date. It’s something about the signature dance and the scale of the video that felt very late ’90s/early 2000s.
Big Sean “Moves”: Big Sean is one of those artists with such a great work ethic and energy—he makes working for him so dope! So it was super inspiring working on this for his recent BET Awards performance!
Victoria Monét ”High Luv”: Super fan of Victoria Monét and love working with her. This is one of my records of hers that puts me in a great mood! Sick dance break at the end!
Beyoncé “Formation”: It’s something about the horns, the 808 and her delivery that just makes you want to dance! When I was choreographing this record, I really wanted to bring those things out, and keeping the pocket super down South.
