Jermaine Dupri On Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction
As a musical pioneer and innovator for the past three decades, songwriter/producer Jermaine Dupri has contributed to numerous chart-topping hits from the likes of Mariah Carey, JAY-Z and Usher among many others while propelling talent through his So So Def Records label.
“I heard about the nomination just like everyone else, and I wasn’t thinking like, ‘Okay, it’s time for me to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.’ I don’t really pay too much attention to it that way, but I have written so many songs, and I wasn’t actually thinkin’ that it was gonna happen,” he tells TIDAL. “It’s the place that I always probably wanted to be but didn’t know I wanted to be there.”
He adds about his Atlanta roots: “Being from Atlanta gives you this different attitude as a black person that you can succeed regardless of what has been put out there and what you believe. With that being said, for me to have this success and to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame is part of that belief. It’s part of that hope.”
On the day of his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (June 14, 2018), JD reminisces on crafting his unique sound and receiving the special honor as a hip-hop artist behind JAY-Z.
