On Tour With: No Joy
Before the Montreal shoegazers hit the road in the United Kingdom throughout November with the recently reunited Quicksand, Jasamine White-Gluz of No Joy spoke to TIDAL about tales from tour.
On time alone during tour… You have to take any alone time you can get whenever it happens, because it does not happen often. For me, that usually means going for a walk in search of coffee and/or small animals to play with.
On maintaining mental and physical health… Always try to do something that makes you happy. Maybe that is finding a swimming spot or buying yourself a slightly more than average priced coffee. I find it’s the little things that make it easier to get through the more challenging times on tour. Treat yourself.
On weird sleeping accommodations… Definitely have stayed in haunted hotels, shared extremely small spaces with bandmates, slept in the van… As long as sleeping is involved, I’m cool with it.
On the most difficult travel to a venue… When you tour, you face many challenges. We’ve faced fires, floods, flat tires, car accidents, canceled flights…I think those are par for the course when you’re traveling as much as we are. That’s why we are giving up touring and all future shows be done from my living room and live-streamed.
On No Joy’s first show… Our first show was opening for Grant Hart (RIP). We had only like two songs at the time. We also used to have two drummers playing at the same time. It was uh… experimental.
On touring with Quicksand… It has been the best tour ever! They are the best tour mates, totally helpful and cool and obviously an amazing band. It’s been fun to play shows where there are circle pits.
On any pre-performance rituals… I always like to stay close to the venue before a show because I’m always paranoid I’ll get distracted and miss the show somehow, even though that has never ever happened. Oh, and always pray. You must pray before shows otherwise it’s for sure going to go terribly.
On listening to music during tour… I actually barely listen to any music when I’m on tour, mostly just watch MTV and TLC shows and listen to podcasts about crime.
On their best show… Quicksand and their fans have been amazingly supportive of us. This whole tour has been some of my favorite shows we’ve played ever.
