‘Out of Pocket’ Ep. 1: Xiu Xiu and (r) Talk ZZ Top

Xiu Xiu and (r) teamed up to release a new split 7″ featuring a duo of excellent ZZ Top covers: “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’.”

To celebrate the release, Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu and Fabrizio Palumbo of (r) shot the very first episode of Out of Pocket, a new TIDAL series in which artists give us a raw, behind-the-scenes look at what they’re up to, all via their own phones.

“It took me a long time to come around to ZZ Top,” Stewart said in a release. “When I was a kid, I thought they were a joke band, and their beards and campy sexuality freaked me out. Later, on Xiu Xiu tours, we would and still do always listen to the Black Flag tour diary Get in the Van, wherein Henry Rollins mentions playing ZZ Top to all the punks in England, telling them it was the new exploited record and watching them cry.”

Xiu Xiu then covered “Sharp Dressed Man” for the AV Club’s covers series and the stars aligned. “Walking down the streets of Torino on tour and talking with dear friend and long time collaborator Fabrizio Palumbo of (r) and his husband Paul Beauchamp, I mentioned we were covering the song,” Stewart said. “They said very matter of factly, ‘Xiu Xiu as ZZ Top and (r) as ZZ Bottom. Let’s do a split 7 inch.’”

Check out the 7″ above and, below, hear Stewart and Palumbo discuss the campy band.
