Artists Pay Tribute to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington

Without Chester Bennington, there would be no Linkin Park. The chart-topping rock group from Agoura Hills, California, perhaps best known for head-thrashers like “One Step Closer,” “Crawling” and “In The End,” penetrated the mainstream with their massive 2000 debut Hybrid theory, which was certified diamond by the RIAA in 2010.

Bennington’s distinct vocals, which could teeter between soothing chants and ear-piercing screams, often painted vivid portraits of mental struggle and troubled relationships in a way that not only shook speakers but guide those seeking escape from life’s lowlights. Linkin Park wouldn’t just keep their talents in-house but later collaborated with the likes of JAY-Z (see: 2004′s collaborative rap-metal EP Collision Course), Pusha-T, Stormzy and Kiiara. Bennington also briefly fronted the Stone Temple Pilots from 2013 to 2015.

The group’s final studio effort was 2017′s One More Light, which served as their sixth album to go No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in May. Linkin Park were also plotting a tour, that was slated to kick off this week. Bennington passed on the birthday of his late friend and collaborator, Chris Cornell.

Below, we’ll be collecting quotes and tweets from artists paying tribute to Chester Bennington, including Bennington’s fellow co-founding band member, Mike Shinoda.

He was the type of artist you can only dream to aspire to be even a fraction as amazing as he was. “artists are ppl compelled to bring beauty into a world that can be so dark. makes sense then that artists are always conscious of darkness.. .. & maybe at times made more vulnerable by it? i don’t know. life can be relentless. heart hurts for Chester’s family/band/friends/fans.” – Paramore’s Hayley Williams

“Shocked about the news of Chester Bennington’s death. I have played shows with him recently..I will miss him & his great talent very much.” – Billy Idol
“I don’t know what to say. This doesn’t feel real. I’m waiting for someone to call and tell me you’re still here. I am devastated and confused. I cannot stop crying every time I’m reminded that you’re no longer here. Chester, you brought an energy to every room and somehow made every moment, no matter what it was, seem carefree. You brought this lightness with you. There was never a dull moment. You’d find a way to make everyone laugh. Like that day in rehearsals, you sang heavy in pretty much every accent I can think of. The other night, I felt so off like a 6th sense. I woke up in the middle of the night and the phone rang . When I walked over to pick it up, I almost fell a couple times and when I tried picking up the phone, I kept shaking uncontrollably while I was trying to answer it. When I was holding it, it was like i was struggling. It was like I felt a fraction of your pain. And the more I think about this, I guess that was your way of saying goodbye, your way of telling me to hold on. My heart is in a million pieces. I miss you so much. I love you. my thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, the guys, their families, the team, every one of your fans and more. Rest in Peace. See you on the other side.” – Kiiara
“Shocked and heartbroken, but it’s true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one.” – Mike Shinoda
