Rising Artist of the Week: KWAYE
This week’s TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week is Zimbabwean-British singer-songwriter, KWAYE. His breezy, lush stylings are nestled between pop and R&B, but genre definitions aside, KWAYE’s music is mostly guided by evocative states of mind. Traversing KWAYE’s catalog presents many distinct moods of the same person navigating the fruits of his labor.
KWAYE arrived in the United States via London to study at UCLA. A chance encounter in an Uber led to KWAYE’s music landing in the hands of the staff at the label Mind of a Genius. The rest is history yet to be told. Since early 2017, KWAYE has released a string of vibrant singles that solidify his unpredictability and readiness to go wherever the mood will take him.
In his EP, Solar, KWAYE shows the dynamic stylings of his sound — from the anthemic march of “Cool Kids” to the soaring serenity of “Little Ones” and the unabashed bop of “Sweetest Life.”
Following up the EP, “Lost in My Boots,” is a soulful croon about the downfall of being blindly in love. “Jasmine” leaves a scorched trail the regains the love lost in “Lost in My Boots.” KWAYE’s most recent release, “I Go,” is a dancefloor-ready track that, for now, helps fill out the picture of who KWAYE may be.
This week, KWAYE talks to TIDAL about the desire to create, the momentum that led to the encounter that changed his life and developing a colorful, meaningful aesthetic. Listen to KWAYE’s “I Go” on the TIDAL Rising: R&B playlist below.
