Soundtrack To My Life: Ayo

Soundtrack To My Life: Ayo

On the release of her self-titled album (October 6), soul singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Ayo digs through the crates to highlight songs that have soundtracked her life. From Bob Marley and Mobb Deep to Busta Rhymes and Amy Winehouse, the good vibrations from this eclectic set are contagious. Allow her to profess her love for the songs below.

Bob Marley, “No Woman, No Cry (Live)”
This song means everything to me. It takes me back to my childhood. Whenever I listen to it, I get goosebumps till this very day!!! It makes me think of my dad, my mom and my siblings. Sometimes it brings tears into my eyes ’cause it triggers old memories of a time that wasn’t the easiest for me and my family! It gives me Hope!!!!!

Refugee Camp All Stars, “The Sweetest Thing”
I never forget when the song came out. I used to play it 50 times a day, and I still do:) Queen Lauryn! She is and always will be one of the greatest to me!!!

Busta Rhymes, “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”
I never liked going to the club that much… my sister had to kinda force me. That’s how boring I was, but whenever the DJ would play this track, I’d be the first one to jump up and dance.

Mobb Deep, “Quiet Storm”
This is my favorite hip-hop track of all time. That beat is something else … Man, did I have a crush on Prodigy when I was a teenager. It broke my heart when he passed away….

Rickie Lee Jones, “We Belong Together”
If you don’t know this tune, you don’t know anything … she inspired me so much as a singer songwriter… What a cool woman! This song takes me on a journey each time I listen to it. I was 20 years old living in London when I discovered her music!!!!

Antonio Carlos Jobim & Elis Regina, “Aguas de Março”
This song makes me wanna fall in love again and again and again…. Portuguese is such a beautiful language, and this song is magic.

Joni Mitchell, “Big Yellow Taxi”
I love her…. She inspired me in many ways…

Ayo, “Boom Boom”
… because it’s one of my own songs with a message that I believe is of importance and will hopefully inspire somebody!!!!

Amy Winehouse, “Tears Dry On Their Own”
Amy and I were both born Sept. 14th. What an incredible artist she was… An old soul gone too soon!!!!

Fugees, “Fu-Gee-La”
The Fugees made my Sweet 16 the greatest time of my life!!!!! I wish they’d reunite to do one more record!!!!!
