TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week: Jesse Royal

Jesse Royal is proof that truth translates. On his debut album, Lily of Da Valley, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart, the reggae singer aims to uplift with 14 tracks about conscious living and all that stems from it.

For the Kingston, Jamaica-bred artist, this is nothing new. Having been born in the rural Maroon Town, Jamaica, and later moving to the urban city of Kingston (“a dog eat dog world,” according to Royal) in 1997, Royal learned that perspective is the key to survival – and so is music.

It was here in Kingston that he developed a friendship with Ziggy Marley’s son, Daniel “Bambaata’ Marley, and recognized the impact of acts like Carl Thomas, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Peter Tosh and Jacob Miller – all of whom would be responsible for Royal trying his hand at the craft. Alongside Marley and their friend Curt “Qban” White, he delved into making music in the same vein of his influential predecessors whose songs shaped Jamaican culture and mentality.

These days, Royal is considered to be one of the leading voices in the next generation of reggae alongside artists like Chronixx, Jah9, Protoje and more. “This movement was birthed from the situations we were witnessing as youths: the need for certain changes, the lack of certain things,” Royal tells TIDAL. “It’s more than music.”

The next generation of reggae is a revolutionary bunch, a group that pushes for positivity and togetherness. “[We are] conscious set of youth holding on to our roots,” Royal says. The artist, now signed to Easy Star Records, works through the messages and practices of reggae legends, using voices from the past as a way to shift the culture forward.

This week, TIDAL shines the spotlight on Jesse Royal as our Rising Pick of the Week. We will get to know the singer with an exclusive interview and his guest-curated playlist. Stay tuned for more from Jesse Royal, and in the meantime, get enlightened and brighten your day with Lily of Da Valley.
