U.K.-bred Maleek Berry was brought up on a concentrated blend of R&B and Christian music, looking to inspiration from artists like Jodeci, Michael Jackson and Boyz II Men while deciding to birth his own career in the church, where at the age of 14, he assembled his first group with two close friends.
Mastering the art of production on Fruity Loops, a popular program at the time, the trio began writing, performing and producing their own work — that is, until two years later, when they parted ways. This shift would give Berry all the more reason to focus on his personal journey and relationship with music.
Over the next few years, Berry pursued a degree in computer science, taught himself how to play the piano and made a life-changing trip to Nigeria. It was here that he decided to expand his network and take his music to the next level, producing for the likes of Wizkid, Sauce Kid and Wande Coal and incorporating African sounds into his own aesthetic.
As his production repertoire was growing and he was beginning to get out his name abroad, Berry decided to take the mic himself. Linking with U.K. rapper Sneakbo on the track and video for “For My People,” he swiftly gained over 100K views, and his name spread as a result. Keeping the momentum, Berry released the self-produced track “Kontrol,” which too was an instant success and cemented his position as an emerging global artist to reckon with.
Fusing African music with hip-hop and dancehall tendencies, Berry has a universal resonance and one that undoubtedly stands out. Don’t miss his latest video for “On Fire” – premiering exclusively this week on TIDAL – and keep up with him over the next few days as TIDAL’s Rising Artist of the Week.
