TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week: Meet Grace Carter
This week’s Rising Artist of the Week is English singer-songwriter, Grace Carter. Carter just released a new single and music video called “Why Her Not Me,” a harrowing, emotional song about her father’s desire to focus on another life in lieu of being present in hers.
With the release of her Saving Grace EP, 2018 has been a remarkable step forward in the career and personal development for the young artist. Her music thus far contains the emotional weight and experience of someone twice her age but is rooted in the self-discovery of one’s early 20s and the ability to see the world a little clearer.
After being gifted a guitar by her step-father, Carter began to write music on her own, getting a sense of how to process and communicate her experience. Alongside this vocational discovery, she started to become more sensitive to her self-image and racial identity. Her personal development occurring at the same time as her growing musical career makes for a reciprocal relationship that may prove to push both forward.
With a sound that harkens back to the days of the chanteuse, like Billie Holliday and Nina Simone, Carter lets her emotions remain at the forefront. There is never any question as to where the heart and soul of the music come from, with mostly sparse instrumentation leaving Carter to carry each song. While not a completely rare commodity in the modern musical landscape, there is a refreshing sense of honesty and vulnerability that will ultimately lead Carter to next phase of her career.
