TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week: Mozzy

TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week: Mozzy

Let’s be clear: while TIDAL is crowning Mozzy with the Rising Artist of the Week title today (March 5), the Oak Park, California, rapper has been rapping for over a decade.

Since landing in second place in a junior high school talent show for performing an original rap song, the MC born Timothy Patterson, 30, has kept the grind on his mind. In the midst of selling drugs and dealing with a prison stint, he was booking features on local artists’ tracks and calculating the change he’d make from his guest verses. Furthermore, he was using his shortcomings as fuel for the violence-riddled gangsta rap he was pushing on the side.

His big break came with “Bladadah” — the Sacramento slang word for “pistol” and title track of his 2015 project, which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums that year. Mozzy would continue to feed his rabid online fanbase by pushing out multiple projects each year: four in 2015, five in 2016 and two in 2017, including his beloved debut, 1 Up Top Ahk.

In 2018, Mozzy (short for “Mozzarella Fellas,” he says) has perked the ears of the masses after getting a shoutout from fellow Californian, Kendrick Lamar at the GRAMMYs and landing a feature on the Black Panther the Album Music From and Inspired By.

On the heels of his Spiritual Conversations EP release, TIDAL spoke with Mozzy about his whirlwind year thus far and tapped the buzzy MC for a playlist rolling out later this week on TIDAL.
