TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week: Saweetie
Saweetie’s slick-talking breakthrough track “ICY GRL” drips with the confidence of an MC who’s clocked in more time than the West Coast rhymer has seen.
The 24-year-old spitter born Diamonté Harper is a freestyle queen (“ICY GRL” was an Instagram freestyle that became an official song) as heard on “Anti” and “400 Degrees” currently on SoundCloud. Although young, the self-proclaimed “lil’ brat brat” cites hip-hop OGs as her influences, from Tupac to JAY-Z. She also salutes hip-hop’s earlier ear worms in her catalogue — the beat for “ICY GRL” samples Khia’s 2002 hit “My Neck, My Back” and “High Maintenance” references the Hot Boys and Big Tymers’ 1999 hit “I Need a Hot Girl.”
Her bars are made for self-made bosses from any era, though. Quick to name check high-end brands (“Ask me if I’m rollin’ with some Gucci, bitch I might be”), Saweetie balances it with priceless inspirational banter (“My dream is like a child and I’m taking all the custody”).
To keep the momentum going, TIDAL has named the Bay Area rapstress this week’s Rising Artist of the Week. Grab the Hennessy (her favorite liquor of choice) and stay tuned for our one-on-one Q&A with Saweetie and her fiery playlist, both rolling out this week.
TIDAL is proud to announce the world's first music service with High Fidelity sound quality, High Definition music videos and expertly curated Editorial.
