TIDAL Rising: Beach Season

TIDAL Rising: Beach Season

One of this week’s Rising picks, Beach Season is an exciting, young R&B duo consisting of Samuel Avant and Simon Blitzer.

Hailing out of Calgary, Canada, the two artists are not newcomers to the music scene; before working under their Beach Season moniker, they performed as a hip-hop act called Obey the Crooks. When Simon said he wanted to rap, he began crafting their early work as Sam learned how to produce electronic beats on Fruity Loops.

With inspiration from the likes of Kaytranada and Grimes, Beach Season has created an immensely personal product filled with vivid yet dreamy beats, catchy melodies and pure harmonics.

We invited Beach Season for a round of our TIDAL Rising Q&A so you can get to know them a little better.

Who is Beach Season? Can you please introduce yourself?

Beach Season is the product of Sam Avant and Simon Blitzer. Hailing from Calgary, Canada we create electronic music infused with R&B and chillwave.

Who were your musical heroes growing up?

We grew up listening to rock and roll, hip-hop and everything in between. Growing up we had a wide range of bands from the likes of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to artists like Kanye West and Tribe Called Quest influence us.

When and how did you first get into music?

We both took music lessons when we were in our early teens and started producing in our late teens. The emergence of music streaming and having that sort of exposure to different musical cultures (via the Internet) is what I think inspired us. We saw people who liked what we liked doing: cool things with limited resources.

Name an album, artist or experience that changed your perspective on music.

D’Angelo’s Voodoo. That album changed the way I look at writing and album composition. It’s a masterpiece from front to back and every song has a defined place. The artists involved, I think, added to the dynamic and chemistry and it’s definitely something you can hear and feel.

What’s the best new song you recently discovered?

Miguel – “Waves (Tame Impala Remix)”

Can you share a fun fact about you or your music?

Beach Season is the 3rd project that we have had together.

What’s your favorite activity besides music?

Photography and Graphic Design

Looking one year ahead, where would you like to see yourself?

Consistently touring and working behind the scenes with other artists (design work, writing etc.) as well as collaborating with some of our favorites. Essentially turning music into a full time job and being able to support ourselves/our people with it.

And finally, if your music were a food what would it be? Please describe.

A dim sum pork bun. It’s fluffy and sweet on the outside yet delectable, meaty and saucy on the inside.
