TIDAL Rising: CHINAH
There’s little question that CHINAH mark one of the finest and most enjoyable pop music groups emerging from the Scandinavian music scene today.
A capable Danish trio made up of Fine Glindvad (vocals), Simon Kjær Lauridsen (guitar) and Simon Lars Gustav Andersson (synths), CHINAH manage to successfully synthesize a multitude of disparate influences in a moving way.
Self-described as “shamelessly melodic,” a delightfully charming and apt turn of phrase, CHINAH blends electro-pop and R&B with Glindvad’s smoldering sound and earnest poetry, featuring lines such as “I can lie here and bleed for you, but that’s not life.”
Sincerity is at the very heart of this trio’s music and must been understood to be their guiding emotional mentality, one that powerfully permeates their every element. Rightfully earning the attention of critics all across Denmark, CHINAH’s most recent album, Once The Lights Are On, is an absolute thrill.
Selected as one of this week’s TIDAL Rising Artist to Watch, we got to know this Danish trio a little better.
* * *
Who is Chinah? Can you please introduce yourself?
We are three friends from Denmark who make anti-climatic pop music together in a small bedroom in Nørrebro, Copenhagen.
Tell us a little about your latest release. What do we get?
We just released Once The Lights Are On, our debut EP. It’s a fairly saturated piece – all of the tracks are to some extent both mellow and energetic.
Who were your musical heroes growing up?
We all grew up with a broad range of differing musical heroes, stretching from Neil Young to Arcadi Volodos to TV-2.
When and how did you first get into music?
All three of us come from musical families. It was pretty inevitable that we would get into music at an early age.
Name an album, artist or experience that changed your perspective on music?
Hmm… Jai Paul.
What’s the best new song you recently discovered?
“Ricochet” by Guns.
Can you share a fun fact about you or your music?
Two tracks from our debut EP, “We Go Back” and “Colder,” were once the same song.
What’s your favorite activity besides music?
Simon can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than 30 seconds.
What’s coming next for you?
Right now we’re in the lab experimenting with some new music. In the summer we’ll play a bunch of festival gigs. We are also preparing for bigger shows including our upcoming headlining shows set for the fall.
Looking some months ahead, what was the best thing that happened to you in 2016?
Our first release.
And finally, describe your music as if it were in physical form.
A shiny, sad disco horse.
