Eighteen was an age of curses and blessings for Jimmy Wopo. Not only had the Pittsburgh, PA native just gotten shot and hospitalized, but he was stepping into his new role as a father to a newborn baby girl, and, unbeknownst to him, racking up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

It was a turning point for Wopo, who was four years into making music in a serious capacity but hadn’t entirely escaped his street mentality. If getting shot wasn’t enough of a wakeup call for him, recognizing his music’s power in YouTube numbers was. The video for “Elm Street” put Wopo on the map and, as far as he was concerned, was the first of many successes to come.

That year, 2016, he dropped two EPs, Woponese and Trapnese, which he recently followed up with his 2017 full-length Jordan Kobe. In a departure from the ultra-chill, weed-obsessed footsteps of fellow Pittsburgh breakouts Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa, Wopo’s music delves into a darker side of the city, wrought with dark soundscapes and chilling experiences.

As TIDAL Rising Artist of the Week, Jimmy Wopo shares a piece of his city with blunt rhymes and an unapologetic attitude to match. Look forward to familiarizing yourself with Jimmy throughout the week with a TIDAL Rising Q&A, exclusive playlist and more.
