TIDAL Rising: Kodie Shane

TIDAL Rising: Kodie Shane

Although she has only recently entered the limelight, the electric Kodie Shane is no stranger to the music industry.

The sole female member of Lil Yachty’s Sailing Team, Shane created her first track, “Crown Me,” at 14 and began writing for other artists at 15. Best known her songs “Hold Up” (ft. Lil Yachty & Lil Uzi Vert) and “Sad” (ft. Yachty), her Soundcloud has amassed millions of streams before ever seeing official release.

Not one to stand still, Shane released the EPs 2060 and  Zero Gravity last year, and she plans on dropping a proper full-length album in the first half of 2017. As backed up by Pitchfork’s recent article: “Never Scared: Kodie Shane Is the Fearless Hip-Hop Prodigy We Need,” Kodie Shane is a must listen for any fan of the emerging sound playfully described as “bubblegum trap.”

In an effort to get to know the undeniable up-and-comer just a little better, we linked up with her for a Rising Q&A.

Who is Kodie Shane? Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Kodie Shane, and I’m an entertainer.

Congrats on being one of TIDAL’s Top 5 Artists to Watch in 2017. Tell us about your 2016.

Thanks so much. It’s really an honor. My 2016 has been great I’ve been working really hard, I put out a couple projects that did great, I went on a sold out tour with my brother Yachty, Fader did a major write up on me, BET Coca-Cola stage… I did some things that I’ve always wanted to do! I’m super excited for 2017!

What’s been your proudest achievement so far?

My proudest achievement thus far mannnn, I can’t even call it. The Fader write-up was really crazy for me ’cause I’m actually in print! But going on tour tops everything really big moment in my life.

When and how did you first get into music?

I got into music “seriously” when I was about 14. My producer Matty P gave me a computer with beats on it and I wrote a song to one of them. And after that I was in love with the process.

Who were your musical heroes growing up?

My musical hero growing up honestly was my big sister Brandi (of the ’90s group Braque) just because I looked up to her I wanted to do what she was doing at that time: making music and touring.

Name an album, artist or experience that changed your perspective on music?

Frank Ocean. Lonny Breaux. Really makes me feel a certain way about music.

Can you share a fun fact about you or your music?

A fun-fact about me is I love ice cream, love stories and little kids.

What’s your favorite activity besides music?

Favorite activity besides music… Idk I just got a new PlayStation so I’m kinda into that right now! Idk. I like music!!

Can you pick another Rising artist you believe in?

Another rising artist I believe in is my artist Saucy. We’re ready to take over! My brothers in the Sailing Team – we’re gonna have a great year! I love love love A Boogie [Wit Da Hoodie]!! I think he had a great year. My sis Cymia. I could go on. I love a lot of stuff.

What’s coming next for you?

What’s next for me I got some stuff I’m really excited about for the beginning of the year the ZeroGravity tour is coming up and it’s gonna be really crazy! I’m dropping another tape – SOON. I’m gonna drop all the joints the fans have been asking me for and everything I love so I can’t wait for the new year!!

Looking one year ahead, where would you like to see yourself?

Where would I like to see my self a year ahead…. somewhere hidden in L.A. …recording a new album! Haha!

And finally, if your music was a physical object what would it be?

If my music was a physical object it would be a fast car.
