TIDAL Rising: Sigrid
Although Sigrid is from a tiny town in Norway, the young up-and-comer has big ambitions, and a voice and attitude to match.
Already a popstar back home, Sigrid is poised to take on the world with her forthcoming major label debut. Her new single, the stirring and amorphous “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” was just released via Island Records and we’re sure you’ll be hearing it everywhere real soon.
Although this may be the Scandinavian 20-year-old’s first record, Sigrid’s work to date demonstrates that she’s more than ready for the big leagues. With her intoxicating voice flowing smoothly over just about any conceivable melody, we feel she’s capable of becoming one of the biggest breakouts of 2017.
We caught up with Sigrid to get to know the young star in the making just a little bit better.
* * *
Who is Sigrid? Can you please introduce yourself?
Well, I’m a 20-year-old girl from Ålesund, a small town on Norway’s west coast.
Tell us a little about “Don’t Kill My Vibe.” What do we get and what’s it all about?
It’s a ballad in the verses and a pop tune in the choruses. It’s inspired by a difficult writing session.
Who were your musical heroes growing up?
Joni Mitchell, Adele, Coldplay and my older sister and brother.
When and how did you first get into music?
Well, this is gonna be a big shoutout to my family! Music has surrounded me for as long as I can remember. My mom sang me to sleep every night, and my dad always played Teenage Fanclub and Neil Young in the car. We listened a lot to Chet Baker and Joni Mitchell during Sunday breakfast too. My siblings are both great musicians, and my grandma taught me how to play piano!
Name a song that changed your perspective on music?
Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” is one of the biggest reasons to why I write pop music. It’s the perfect pop song.
What’s the best new song you recently discovered?
Can I please mention a few? “Medicine” by Hajk, a beauiful song by a Norwegian band that reminds me a bit of the Swedish band Amason. “(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano” by Sampha. Another beautiful song; I heard it was recorded on the piano in Ocean Sound Recordings, just outside my hometown! Best studio in the universe. And finally “On + Off” by Maggie Rogers.
Can you share a fun fact about you or your music?
I talk a lot about cats and memes in the studio.
What’s your favorite activity besides music?
Hiking! Norwegian nature. Damn!
What’s coming next for you?
Traveling. Writing more songs. Touring.
Looking one year ahead, where would you like to see yourself?
I hope I’m still best friends with my band after touring. Ehm… it would be really cool if people liked my music!
And finally, if your music was an animal what would it be?
It would probably be a sassy cat who also has feelings.
