* * *
Based In: Los Angeles, CA
Sounds Like: Drowsy Pop w/ Hints of R&B
Although you may not have heard of her until now, SYD has deep roots in the music industry. For starters, she is the lead vocalist for the band The Internet, not to mention a member of the infamous L.A. hip-hop collective Odd Future. SYD first began making music at 14-years-old when she built herself a small home studio to work on sound engineering and production. Currently signed to Columbia Records, SYD released her debut studio album, Fin, days ago to critical acclaim. Parallels have been drawn between SYD’s sound and that of ’90s R&B superstars like Aaliyah and TLC. Fin definitely signals a new direction for SYD and it would seem today that there’s no place for her to go but up.
Name: Sofia Reyes
Based In: Monterrey, Mexico
Sounds Like: Upbeat, Latin Pop
Like many great artists, Mexican popstar Sofia Reyes comes from humble career beginnings. Since getting her start posting piano covers on YouTube, Reyes was ultimately discovered by Latin superstar Prince Royce, who immediately made her the first-ever signee to his new D’León Records label. Her most successful single to date, “Muévelo” (ft. Wisin), has already been certified platinum and appears on her debut studio album, Louder!, released just last week. With Sofia Reyes’ energetic and catchy bilingual lyrics flowing seamlessly off her tongue, you can bet she’s set to have a huge 2017.
Name: Mike Casey
Based In: Hartford, CT
Sounds Like: Modern Jazz
Saxophonist Mike Casey puts out some of the best contemporary jazz we’ve heard in a long while. From the day he first picked up a saxophone in fifth grade, Casey’s love for jazz became inescapable. Beyond being nominated for “Best Jazz” at the CT Music Awards, Casey has performed alongside prominent jazz artists such as Marc Cary, Charles Tolliver, DJ Logic and more as well as performing at festivals like the Exit Zero Jazz Festival and the NYC Winter Jazz Fest. Released Tuesday, February 7, Casey’s brand new album, The Sound Of Surprise: Live At The Side Door, is a must listen for all fans of jazz. Hear his 30 Under 30 playlist here.
Name: Taylor Acorn
Based In: Lynchburg, VA and Nashville, TN
Sounds Like: Country-Pop
Country artist Taylor Acorn is one of the hottest up-and-coming songbirds in the nation. To date, she has officially released two beloved original singles, “What Do I Do” and “Without You,” in addition to boasting a substantial handful of cover performances on YouTube. With a sound reminiscent of equal parts Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, it’s really only a matter of time before we’re all hearing Taylor Acorn all over the radio. She’s currently hard at work on an EP set for release later in 2017. We can’t wait.
Name: Russell Elliot
Based In: Brooklyn, NY
Sounds Like: Culturally Progressive R&B
Russell Elliot is a groundbreaking 23-year-old R&B artist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Over the last few years, Elliot has built himself an extremely loyal fan-base, one rooted in his penchant for the progressive. Shedding the misogyny so often present in music today, in his own words, Elliot personally hopes that in his work one “will find an irreverent embracing of the complexities surrounding sex, love, and sexuality,” that one will, “in short … find the truth.” Be on the lookout for his upcoming EP, set for release later this year. In the meantime, you can check out his new single, “Only You,” today.
