TIDAL Rising: This Week’s 5 Artists To Watch

Name: Beach Season
Origin: Calgary, Canada
Sounds Like: Melodic, Electronic R&B

Consisting of Samuel Avant and Simon Blitzer, Beach Season are a young duo hailing out of Calgary. The two artists are not newcomers to the music scene; before working under their Beach Season moniker, they performed as a hip-hop act called Obey the Crooks. When Simon said he wanted to rap, he began crafting their early work as Sam learned how to produce electronic beats on Fruity Loops. With inspiration from the likes of Kaytranada and Grimes, Beach Season has created an immensely personal product filled with vivid yet dreamy beats, catchy melodies and pure harmonics. Check out the duo’s new single, “Pink Room.”

 

Name: She Makes War
Origin: Bristol, UK
Sounds Like: Exciting, Eclectic Pop-Punk

She Makes War is a solo project from vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Laura Kidd. On tour for a grueling year and a half now, she’s been pulling in stellar reviews crisscrossing Europe and the UK. The List recently described her one-woman show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as “a charming hour of biographical storytelling and music…perfectly executed acoustic gems.” She Makes War is known for it’s eclectic choice of stage instruments, from electric guitar to foot percussion and megaphone. Name: Mannequin Pussy
Origin: Philadelphia, PA
Sounds Like: Romantic, Emotional Pop-Punk

Based out of Philadelphia, Mannequin Pussy consists of four members: Dabice, Paul, Kaleen Reading and Colins Regisford. Currently on tour across the U.S., the band has described their sound as “romantic punk-pop for the ADD generation,” featuring songs with pivotal shifts in sound and tone that produce an oscillating but understandable image of raw emotion. Their new most recent single, “Denial,” is out now.

 

Name: Owen Bones
Origin: Chicago, IL
Sounds Like: Hypnotizing, Malleable Sounds

Owen Bones is a 21-year-old electronic music producer from the west side of Chicago. In stark contrast to what many electronic DJ’s are aiming for in today’s scene, his music is often minimalist in makeup but not in impact. Collaborating with such prominent hip-hop and pop artists as Saba, Mothica and Tunji Ige, his sounds also tend to transcend the electronic base. Owen Bones’ new LP, Dive Club, is due out later this month. In the meantime, be sure check out “Narcosis,” his latest single featuring Saba.

 

Name: LB199X
Origin: Washington, D.C.
Sounds Like: Engaging, Storytelling Hip-Hop

Washington D.C. native LB199X has exploded onto the scene in 2016 with unadulterated, soul searching tracks like “Gods.” His lyrics and stories provide content and ideas for his listeners to encounter, peruse, and contemplate for themselves, painting a vivid picture of the world that we live in from the eyes of a pensive, creative, and engaged young African American man, a perspective that is often overshadowed and overlooked. When asked what the message behind his music is, LB responds, “Speaking my mind, that’s my main message…more so, stand up for something that you believe in no matter what it is.” Check out LB199X’s new single, “War,” featuring Marcellus Juvann.
