TIDAL Rising: This Week’s 5 Picks

TIDAL Rising is a dedicated showcase for today’s emerging and independent artists. Curated by the TIDAL Editors, Rising highlights artists just beginning to make waves. We’re continuously updating the Rising section’s album and track lists, but each week we highlight five special picks you really shouldn’t miss out on.

J.Drew

Detroit singer J.Drew comes from a musical family, with his mother being member of the gospel sister act The Clark Sisters and his sister an active solo artist. Just after releasing “All I Need Is You” featuring Elijah Blake, Drew has unveiled a brand new 4-track EP. Drew is signed to Live TMG as an artist and Pharrell Williams’ StarTrak as producer.

Bohicas

This buzzed-about quartet from Britain recycles the greatness of the Libertines, Led Zeppelin and Arctic Monkeys to a riveting effect. Seedy garage rock and dark post-punk are part of their mix, leading NME to describe them as “a hip-shaking slice of rock ’n’ roll so cool it could freeze the Equator.” Their anticipated debut album is out in August on Domino.

Anderson East

Alabama native Anderson East is touring with outlaw country singer Sturgill Simpson, even though East is more musically aligned with the soul and R&B of Stax and Muscle Shoals. His major label debut, Delilah, is due in July, but you can check out his singles now.

The Deslondes

New Orleans band The Deslondes plays a joyous hybrid of country and Southern R&B, rooted partly in the Texas singer-songwriter tradition and partly on the weathered floor of a Louisiana dance hall. Their debut album is out now on the always-reliable New West Records. “The Deslondes sounds like something scavenged and salvaged, as though the band members found that walking bass line or that rockabilly rhythm just lying around on the street, unused and abandoned. They know it’d be a shame to let it go to waste.” (Pitchfork)

Kwamie Liv

We first took note of Kwamie Liv in 2014, when she released her debut EP Lost in the Girl. The Danish-Zambian R&B singer with an otherworldly voice is now gearing up for her second EP, teasing us with the magnificent single “Higher.”.
